Mrs. Tighe

Welcome to our class web page.  I will be updating the calendar with important dates and times as they become known.

I would also like to add links to discussion topics from class.  Today,we considered hundred year periods in history.  The children had plenty of information from their US History lessons and their own lives (Red Sox won the World Series in 2004 when many of them were born!)  They also offered the idea that the Rosetta Stone was decoded in the 1800s. I told them we could look it up, but had no class time.  Check the Useful links button if they are interested in reading about it!

We have had a busy few weeks, and are ready for more in the upcoming weeks!  We have had approval for adding milkweed to locations around the school campus with the hopes to create a butterfly rest stop!  We will be collecting milkweed seed pods here and at homes to save for spring planting!  More info to follow!

We are studying Our Solid Earth and learning about rocks and minerals!  The kids are discovering luster, streak, cleavage or fracture differences!  We are going to learn about how we use minerals and rocks in everyday life!  Expect to see them noticing rocks and minerals in your world!

We are mid-way through our One Grade/One Book read of Wonder.  I hope the children are learning acceptance and human nature as well as writing techniques, character development and plot structure through our discussions.

So much learning!  So much fun!

Grammar Rules!  We are working hard to make learning Grammar fun!  Today we enjoyed racing to write singular and plural common nouns.  Sounds like fun, right?  It was fun and the kids wrote over 300 nouns!  We then found common and proper nouns and enjoyed reading only the proper nouns with 'British' accents!  Making the learning fun and creating a positive learning environment is 3/4 of the work of learning!

Rock-N-Roll Writing!  We are finishing our study of our Solid Earth with a written report. We brainstormed all of the words we'd studied in relation to Solid Earth, and the kids chose three areas of interest to write about. They are asked to be creative with their vocabulary use, structured in their report format, and complete in their explanations. This report will serve as their end of unit assessment.  I'm excited to have them show what they know!

Finally, the milkweed project is out into the community!  Two students in our class took the idea to their Girl Scout troop and presented it as a community service opportunity!  Their role may be to contact the Mansfield Garden Club and the Mansfield Green to see if either will consider adding milkweed plants to their natural spaces! Wouldn't it be great to make multiple rest stops for butterflies and other pollinators?Go team!

Writing is our focus this week!  The kids are working on using specific language to paint a vivid picture with their words.  We are also building our division skills by learning diverse methods of solving problems!

IXL is an online practice page that has both a math and a literacy component.  The kids get great practice and build their knowledge at the same time.  Please encourage their use of IXL at home.

We are going to be planting some milkweed seeds Monday next week.  I will be working to clear the land tomorrow with the kids tomorrow and/or Monday morning.  If you'd like to join us, stop by around 10:45 am!

Wow! December was a flurry of activities and fun!  Now, after a great vacation, we have hit the ground running in all areas!  We are enjoying aclass reading of Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbit.  It considers the choice of life everlasting and we have had some interesting discussions already!  We will be focused on elaborative writing, theme, and plot development.  We have learned about electrical circuits and currents and volts and will be exploring some (safe) hands-on activities! And we are PEMDAS experts!  We have learned the Order of Operations and are becoming scrupulous mathematitions!  Looking forward to so much more ahead!
