The Gentili's came together for an amazing lesson. High school students, students Tyler Gentili and Jacob Gentili (enrolled in Mrs. Maggie Gentili's Marine Science Class) visited Mrs. Jen Gentili's third graders and taught a lesson on marine protected areas. It was a great lesson with many opportunities for participation by the third graders.

Fifth Grade Students - Scoliosis Screening to Begin the week of January 27th. The MA Department of Public Health requires yearly screenings for Scoliosis for all students in grades 5 through 9. Screenings of fifth-grade students will be done by the school nurses in the Health Office during physical education classes. This will occur during January 27th- February 7th. Screenings are done individually and privately. Students who wear bras are encouraged to wear a sports bra, tank top, or camisole under their shirts for comfort and support. This type of clothing permits more accurate observation of the back. Please plan on having your student screened on their scheduled gym day during the weeks of January 27th and February 3rd). If you do not have appropriate clothing, please let us know and we can accommodate. If you prefer that your child be screened by your private physician, you must provide documentation of a current (WITHIN ONE YEAR) physical examination that specifically states that postural screening has been done. It is also helpful for us to know if your child is currently under care for scoliosis. Any such documentation should be provided to the school nurses as soon as possible, and can be faxed to (508) 261-7522, mailed to 255 East Street, or sent in with your child. If your child has any unusual findings, you will be notified and asked to take your child to a physician as a precaution. The majority of students exhibit no findings. If nothing unusual is found, we will not be contacting you again until the screening next year. Any questions, please reach out to: Courtney Cogliano RN, courtney.cogliano@mansfieldschools.com or Aimee Reber RN, aimee.reber@mansfieldschools.com

EL Family Night On November 6, Mansfield Public Schools, in partnership with the Mansfield Public Library, hosted an English Learner (EL) Family Night at the public library. MPS EL Teachers Sofia Constantino, Sue England, Elsbeth Finucane-Albert, Mark Krikorkian, and Nicole Lynch talked to families about programs and resources offered in the schools, including translation and interpretation services. This was also an opportunity for families to meet their children’s EL teachers. Representatives from the library offered a tour of the facility and helped attendees apply for a library card. The district has been holding this event for several years, and this is the 2nd year we have partnered with the Mansfield Public Library. The night was attended by over 25 families from Haiti, India, Pakistan, Syria, China, Algeria, Cuba, Venezuela, Brazil, Egypt, El Salvador, and more. “Events like this reinforce the district's vision and mission of building relationships and connections between families and educators and the Mansfield community,” stated Michael Connolly, Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning. Thank you to Ms. Constantino, Ms. England, Ms. Finucane-Albert, Mr. Krikorian, Ms. Lynch, and QMS Assistant Principal Jim Schliefke for their support and attendance at this community event.

Revitalization of Pollinator Garden Thanks to a generous grant from the Plant Something Bee-autiful Program, sponsored by Keep Massachusetts Beautiful, Keep Mansfield Beautiful's (KMB) Adopt-a-Spot initiative has secured $2,500 to revitalize the pollinator garden at the Jordan/Jackson School. This garden will feature a selection of drought-resistant, native pollinator plants, enriching the local ecosystem, while dedicated volunteers like Hall Landscaping along with volunteers from KMB will oversee its maintenance for the enjoyment of the entire community. Co-Principal John Nieratko, who oversees the STEM curriculum, expressed his heartfelt gratitude for Mrs. Newell’s commitment to the garden and the valuable learning experiences it provides for students and residents alike. “As a member of the Keep Mansfield Beautiful Committee, I proposed the idea of incorporating the pollinator garden into KMB’s Adopt-a-Spot program,” shared Ana Newell, KMB Adopt-a-Spot Coordinator. “This initiative connects local businesses and individuals with community sites that need beautification and ongoing care. Currently, 15 sites participate in the program, ensuring that those who adopt these locations actively nurture and maintain the gardens.” A few years ago, the Adopt-a-Spot Program successfully received a grant from the Plant Something Bee-autiful Program, which was used to rejuvenate the garden in front of the Superintendent’s Office at 2 Park Row. This garden now flourishes each season, boasting a vibrant array of stunning flowers.
